Here's why...

I decided to start a new blog!

The new blog will focus on parenting and special needs-two subjects that are close to my heart.

I hope to see you there!
HannahSunshine and Spoonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15218542467607737336noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282392184389350936.post-43549890678049683042016-04-09T19:20:00.000-05:002016-04-09T19:20:21.160-05:00Random UpdatesOkay...so about Little Dude's 2nd Annual Birthday Blessings Bash. I completely forgot to announce an organization, but I still plan to donate! I'm donating 20% of my sales during the month of March from my Etsy shop to Gracie's Gowns again this year :) That comes out to a total donation of $77! Thank you everyone for supporting this, and I can't wait to do it again next year!

Lately, I've been questioning why I blog. Originally it started as a sort of digital scrapbook for my kids, but now I use Facebook, Instagram, and Chatbooks to make digital and hard copy scrapbooks of our lives. I had also hoped to turn it into a professional blog that brought in an income for my family, but I'm just not able to put the time into it to do that. So where do I go from here? I love blogging, but I don't know if I can justify taking time away from my family and boutique (which is bringing in an income...a small one, but it's still something!) to do something that doesn't give anything back to my family in return. My reasons for blogging are purely selfish at this point. I enjoy it and that's why I want to do it. However, I'm not supermom, as the title of this blog says. I just don't have time for all of my interests right now. I love reading, writing, sewing, playing music, singing, and more. With four young kids and health struggles of my own, some days I don't even get the basics done around here. So I need to pick and choose what I'm going to do with my time and energy.

So here's the very tentative plan...I will be putting this blog on the back burner for the time being while I figure out what to do. As special needs and parenting are subjects that are very close to my heart, I would love to start blogging about those to help others who are in the same or similar boat as me. I'm not sure if I'll do that here or start a new blog and clean slate. No matter what I decide to do, I want to thank all of my readers from the bottom of my heart. I've loved interacting with you all and I appreciate every one of you more than you'll ever know.
However, we've run into a bit of a snag.

In my post a few days ago, I said that I'd chosen Go Shout Love as the organization to donate to this year, but today, I found out that Go Shout Love is going to cease operation as of today. I'm saddened to hear that as it's a great organization that has touched many lives, but understand that sometimes, finances just don't allow for things to continue the way they were.

So...I need your help choosing another organization to donate to this year! Nominate one in the comments here or by commenting on the posts asking for nominations on Facebook or Instagram. I'll go through the nominations and select one on Saturday, March 5th.

Thanks for your help! Little Dude and I can't wait to see who you all nominate!
My blog has been sadly neglected, but I've been working on a blogging schedule and will be starting up again soon. For now though, I'm back with Little Dude's 2nd Annual Birthday Blessings Bash!

Little Dude will be TWO next week so it's time to kick this off! We've been blessed with so much help and so many prayers since Little Dude was born, and so we're giving back by donating 20% of the sales made during the month of March from Annalie's Baby Boutique to a different organization each year.

Last year, we were able to donate $25 to Gracie's Gowns, a non-profit organization that provides personalized hospital gowns to
chronically ill and special needs children at no cost to the family.
Gracie's Gowns is very special to me because not only was it founded and
run by a very sweet friend of mine, but because Little Dude received a
gown from her as well.

This year, I've chosen Go Shout Love. I've followed Go Shout Love on Instagram for about 2 years now and love what they do to support families of children who have rare diseases. They feature a different family each month to raise awareness for their disease and money to help with medical and related expenses.

Let's make this a great month for Go Shout Love!

By this time every year, I'm usually just about done with my Christmas shopping and am listening to Christmas music every time Hubby leaves the house (he's a no-Christmas-anything-before-Thanksgiving type of guy). This year though, I just can't get into the Christmas spirit or bring myself to do anything Christmassy. It's not because I'm a scrooge though. To show you why I'm just not there yet, let's play a spot-the-difference-in-the-pictures game.

I just can't get into Christmas when it's still fall outside! We live in Minnesota and I am absolutely LOVING the warm temps and uncharacteristically beautiful weather we're having in November, but it is killing my Christmas spirit.

When Flyby Promotions sent me a MercyMe Christmas CD to review on my blog, I set it by the stereo and forgot about it since, well, you know. (See above pictures if you still don't know) Until I got a reminder email yesterday..."Your review is due today!"

Whoops.

So I got up this morning, got the big kids off to school, pleaded with the little kids to play nicely with each other (and please, for the love of chai lattes, no pooping until I'm done writing!), and turned on the cd.

I love it. It's Christmassy without being in your face jingle bells and Bethlehem stars. Beautiful music with beautiful lyrics...it's just perfect. Have I mentioned that I love it? I'm totally leaving it in the cd player until January. I think I've found the cd to ease me into the Christmas spirit. I kind of figured it would be a winner since I love MercyMe's other albums, and I wasn't disappointed.
He is officially a supertubie graduate!!!

He kept getting infections on his g tube, and yesterday I brought him in for his second infection in a month. His doctor and I discussed it and decided that the cons of keeping it in outweighed the pros at this point. He hasn't used it since March 28th except for meds (which he can also take orally). The original plan was to leave it in through cold and flu season just in case he regressed, but his doctor and I are both confident that he will be just fine without it. So without further ado, the doctor pulled it out, we stuck some gauze on the site in case of leakage, and just like that, he was tube free!

His stoma has already closed up most of the way and there hasn't been any leaking so far. I was a little nervous about feeding him after he had it removed because, hello! hole in the stomach! But he's done just fine and there haven't been any messes yet :)
Per his geneticist, we were having him tested for a newly found connective tissue disorder called Loey's Dietz Syndrome along with an array of other connective tissue disorders. Everything fit and the diagnosis would explain everything that's gone wrong since his birth.

Today, I received a call from Little Dude's genetic counselor with the results of the test. I held my breath, knowing that no matter what the result was, I would be crying as soon as I hung up the phone. Crying from relief that we had an answer and sorrow that my son had a genetic syndrome. Or crying from relief that he didn't have a connective tissue disorder and disappointment because we still wouldn't have an answer. Either way, I
knew it would be bittersweet.

The results were negative.

The geneticist didn't recommend any other testing at this time, but wanted to continue to follow Little Dude clinically. And that was it. I hung up the phone and cried alone out in the garage where the kids couldn't follow me.

We've spent most of Little Dude's life waiting for the results of different genetic tests he's had done, all with negative results. This time though, we thought we might finally have an answer, a name to put to whatever it is that has wreaked havoc in my precious baby boy's body. We thought that the uncertainty of his future would be replaced by certainty or at least become a little more clear.

I used Facebook to write a targeted update to the family and close friends who have been waiting for results right along with us. For them, negative tests results are a reason to rejoice, and understandably so. But for me, it means something different. It means that that heavy suitcase of wondering, waiting and wishing for an answer, the suitcase that I was hoping to finally set down, is still mine to carry. And now, I have to carry it farther than I thought I would.

Right now, Little Dude is doing amazingly well. Developmentally, he's at about a 10-11 month level and is making progress. He's 100% orally fed and only uses his G Tube for his meds in the morning and evening. Due to slow weight gain and some weight loss, we've added a can of Pediasure to his diet each day and that has been helping. He's been fairly healthy with only several minor colds and a couple of ear infections over the last few months. He's outgrowing his tracheomalacia, his heart is healthy and he will probably outgrow his murmur on his own, and his GERD seems to be under control. He hasn't needed a nebtreatment in a while and hasn't had pneumonia for about 6 months now. He's a happy little boy who brings me so much joy that I just can't stop myself from scooping him up and squeezing him somtimes.

So where do we go from here? Well, we keep treating symptoms and hopefully, we'll see Little Dude continue to improve. And maybe someday in the future, we'll have an answer, but that day is not today.

I'm going to leave you with a picture I took of Little Dude last night because...well, it's cute :)

The reason for my absence?

Summer.

Do you remember the summer bucket list I wrote? I've been focusing on enjoying my children instead of constantly worrying about the things on my to-do list. I've semi-unplugged, evidenced by the lack of activity on my blog. You can still see updates on my family on Instagram though! It's been a good summer-the first good one in three years.

Here are some updates on the family...

Princess: She's been reading like crazy which is awesome to see since she struggled so much with it during the school year. She's in the lead for her age group in the summer reading program at the library. She also just learned how to ride her bike without training wheels. It took her about 5 minutes to figure it out after the training wheels came off.

Little Man: He loves riding his bike too although he's not quite ready to lose the training wheels yet. He's already got a farmer's tan and jumps at the chance to go farming with Daddy. He's starting to figure out how to sound words out and asks me almost everyday if he can go to school yet. He's very excited to start kindergarten in the fall!

Star: This kid...she's the cutest, most angelic looking child with her blonde ringlets and big blue eyes. Don't let that fool you. She's a firecracker who never stops moving. She refuses to go potty on the big potty and won't give up her diapers. She LOVES playing outside and is pretty good about following the rules. Her favorite activity is swinging. She's still only 24 pounds at 2 years, 10 months old and we're trying to put some weight on her, but she's just a tiny little thing.

Little Dude: He's been so active that I think that's part of the reason why he has been having problems gaining weight lately. He learned how to pull himself up to standing when he was 15 1/2 months old and learned how to crawl on his hands and knees the day he turned 16 months old. He's had a few small colds and fevers, but nothing serious. He can drink out of sippy cups, but because he hasn't figure out how to tip a cup up yet, he uses straw sippy cups. He's officially done with bottles and hasn't needed a tube feeding since March 28th! He only had two doctor appointments during the whole month of June and one this month so far. It feels so strange not to spend half our time at the clinic and hospital!

Hubby: Nothing really to report here. Farm, work, sleep, eat. That pretty much sums it up :)

Me: I've been having fun coming up with new applique designs for my Etsy shop and designing fabric for my Spoonflower shop. Other than that, I've been chilling with the kids, keeping up with housework (never-ending!), and hanging out with other mom friends.

And of course, a few random pictures to round out this post...
I felt bad because the summer before that (2012), I was very pregnant and miserable and didn't do ANYTHING fun with the kids. Little did I know that less than a month after putting together our 2013 summer bucket list, I would be in my first trimester with Little Dude which meant that I spent the whole summer nauseous and sleeping. The next summer (2014), Little Dude was...um, difficult to care for, to say the least, and survival, not fun, was on the top of my list.

This summer, I'm not pregnant, not going to get pregnant (No, really, I mean it this time!), and Little Dude is SOOO much easier to care for than last year.

I decided to take the plunge and put together a 2015 Summer Bucket List for our family. Without further ado, here it is....

1. Have fun.

2. Have fun.

3. Have fun.

And that's it. No big aspirations. No big plans. No guilt when things don't go as planned. No expectations other than to have fun. I just want to enjoy time with my kids. With all of Little Dude's needs and medical appointments, the three older kids have been somewhat on the back burner for the last year, and I want to make up for that simply by spending time with them as much as I can.

This summer we will go on walks, play at the park, get out the bubble machine, splash around in our plastic wading pool, and have fun. If we are able to, we might go to the zoo or a museum or we might not. This year, the emphasis is on the quality, not quantity of experiences.

What plans do you have this summer?

Weight and height: 19 pounds and 29.5" tall.

Wearing size: Size 3 diapers and 12 month clothes.

Likes: Baths! He learned how to splash in the bath right before his surgery in March and gets excited when I start getting the bathtub ready for him now. He loves playing with the big kids and tries to follow them around. He LOVES being outside and cries when the other kids go outside without him. If they leave the door open, he'll hightail it over there to try to get outside.

Dislikes: He begs for food now and hates it when we don't share what we're eating with him. Because he still chokes easily and can't have dairy yet, we can't always share, but I try to find something on my plate that he can eat.

Eating habits: His feeding skills have doubled in the last month! Things he choked on a few weeks ago, he's able to handle just fine now. He eats EVERYTHING by mouth, and the last time I tube fed him was March 28th! He passed a swallow study with four different textures and thicknesses with flying colors last week so we have no concerns. He hardly throws up anymore, and I think his reflux has improved. He eats three meals and one snack a day and is even using a straw sippy cup! He usually only drinks 1-2 ounces from it, but the other day, he drank all 5 ounces with no problem so we're on our way to phasing out the bottles. He loves baby food pouches and I use them to supplement his diet after offering him table foods as he's not always able to eat enough of those in one sitting.

Last month, his GI and allergy specialists okayed him to eat gluten which has been great. He loves crackers, bread, and pasta and the gluten free versions of those foods had a texture that he often choked on so being able to eat gluten has really opened up a lot of things for him. We'll be introducing dairy to his diet too soon.

Sleeping habits: He's been starting to phase out morning naps. He still needs them about half the time, but I learned quickly that if he fights the morning nap at all, he won't take an afternoon nap so I've been watching his cues more closely to determine if he should lay down in the morning or not. He hasn't been waking up quite as often at night and is down to 1-2 times. That's not a big deal because all I have to do is give him back his pacifier. and he goes right back to sleep.

Milestones: He learned how to army crawl up and over things such as the shelf on our end tables and is able to get up on his knees or into a sitting position when he's propped up a little bit. Still not crawling on his hands and knees, but thanks to his protective belt and cloth G Tube pads, we've been able to avoid irriation on his tube site lately. He's able to lean on something and stand for a few seconds at a time if I put him in that position. He even was able to get himself in a partial standing position (leaning onto the seat of the chair with his legs straight) when he tried to climb up on our fisher price toddler rocker. He's also turned into a little chatterbox which is adorable even though he doesn't say any actual words yet. He says "mamama" when he's upset so I think maybe he's referring to me, but I haven't seen conclusive proof of that yet.

Miscellaneous: Around 7-8 months, Little Dude got 6 teeth in all at once and then didn't get any more for a long time. Last month though, he finally started teething again-10 teeth all at once! He now has a full mouth of teeth. It was a little rough for a couple of weeks when he had so many teeth popping through the gums at the same time, but we survived and he's back to his happy self now :) He has turned into a drool factory though!

Developmentally, Little Dude is still 4-5 months behind, but he's making amazing progress and his fine motor skills are right on track. His therapists, his doctors, and I are all blown away by how fast he's progressing on some things. I just have to keep reminding myself that although he's still not even close to walking, he'll get there in his own time.

I wasn't invited.

Yes, we're getting along just fine (we went shopping for a dress for her wedding the day before she got married.) She and her fiance had a very small ceremony at the park with a justice of the peace. They each had a witness to stand up for them, and both sets of parents were there. They plan to have a simple reception at a later date to celebrate their marriage with friends and family.

When she married her husband, my sister followed in the steps of my older sister and me by marrying her first boyfriend.

They kept their wedding a secret until the last minute from everyone except for a few close friends and family. The reactions they've received since letting the cat out of the bag have been good overall, but there were a few people who were horrified at the way the wedding was done.

I'm proud of my sister for doing things the way she wanted to do them and not giving into society's pressure to spend a ton of money on a big wedding. She and her fiance decided that the most important thing was the marriage, not the wedding, and that's something that gets confused quite a bit nowadays.

Congratulations to my baby sister...I'm still having a hard time believing that she's married now...maybe it's because I didn't get to actually see the wedding?

Anyways, I'm thrilled for her and her new husband and can't wait to see them when they get back from their weekend honeymoon.
We didn't have any room for a high chair at our old house so I had to get a space saver instead of a traditional high chair. I'm SOOO glad I did! It reclines back for young infants, has a 5 point harness, straps onto a chair easily, and the tray slides close enough to the baby that they can't climb out. The cover wipes clean and can easily be removed to throw in the washing machine. It also converts to a booster seat although with 4 kids in 7 years, I haven't had the chance to try out that feature yet. Traditional high chairs with the same features are often twice as expensive as the space saver high chair.
These are hands-down my favorite pacifiers. I tried quite a few different ones with Princess, but these were the best. They come in tons of cute designs and were the only pacifiers that didn't cause irritation around the mouth due to the drool factor. They have dimples on the underside and holes for airflow. Little Man's skin was super-sensitive as a baby so the Mam Air Pacifiers were perfect for him with their open design.
The wide mouths on Avent bottles make it easy to mix up a bottle with one hand without dumping formula all over the counter. The wide design also make the bottles much easier to clean than standard size bottles. I like that the nipples have numbers right on them to indicate the flow of the nipple so there's no guesswork. The measurements on the side are also easy to read.
We started out with an exersaucer, but were able to use my sister's jumperoo for the last two babies (Little Dude is still using it!). I liked the jumperoo MUCH better than the exersaucer. It folds up when not in use, has four different height adjustments, and the hanging toys can easily be switched out for different ones. My kids seemed to like the motion of the jumperoo better than the exersaucer plus the jumperoo isn't as noisy when a baby is jumping in it.
I love how lightweight and supportive the Bumbo seat is. My kids were able to use this from a few months of age. When we were going somewhere that I knew didn't have a high chair or place to put the baby, I'd throw this in the car to take along. The tray is small and lightweight as well so it was easy to bring that too.

I got these when Princess was little and have used them with all four of my kids. Babies love flipping the durable pages and chewing on the handle. Little Man learned all of his letters, colors, shapes, and numbers from this just by looking at it everyday with me, and Star is on her way to learning them too. I love that the pages can be written on with a dry-erase marker and then wiped clean. My kids loved tracing the objects on the pages which helped them learn better. This set of flash cards is great for when you're out and about, and you can easily use baby links through the handle to make sure it doesn't get lost.
This is a super cute toy and all of my kids, my nieces and nephews, and everyone else I've ever seen with it has loved it. It plays classical music so it's not annoying to have to listen to it for long periods of time. Of course, my favorite feature is the volume control :)
My all-time favorite swaddle blankets are the large flannel ones my aunt has made for each of my kids, but muslin blankets come in second. They're lightweight so baby won't get too warm and have just enough stretch in them to easily get a tight swaddle. I also used them all last summer to throw over the carseat when we were out in the sunshine.
Baby socks are tiny. They can easily get lost in the wash so to keep from having to buy new socks every few weeks or so, throw the dirty socks in a lingerie bag and wash them in that.
I keep one of these in the car and one at home because they make it so easy to feed the baby whatever we're eating. Just grind it up, add some liquids if it's thick and you have homemade baby food in just a few minutes.
About the movie:

Having lost his faith many years ago, Detective Bill Broadly is called
to investigate the disappearance of the local church's collection plate.
As he questions its various church members, rumors swirl as more
congregants learn about the theft. When one unexpected church-goer
confesses to stealing the funds, the confession resurrects Broadly's
views on God, and helps him see that through faith and belief there
really is rebirth and redemption.

Right from the start of the movie, I had a character pegged as the suspect. The movie's description said that the thief was an "unexpected church-goer" so I had a few people I thought it also might be, but when the thief finally came clean, I was surprised. The movie kept me guessing the whole time and had a storyline that was easy to follow, yet interesting with lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed this movie and can't wait to watch it again with Hubby.

I wasn't really sure how the tagline "a story of Easter redemption" fit the movie, but the message was still really good. The perception of Christianity in the movie was spot on. I also enjoyed the humor in the story line.

The book teaches that stealing is wrong and also about forgiveness. The lessons were taught in a way that was fun and entertaining. I also love that the lead character, Elli, prayed for a sweet dream before she went to bed and ended up having such a fun one. Princess is sometimes upset about having bad dreams and this gave her the idea to pray about it every night. My girls loved the artwork in the book, and Princess enjoyed reading it to her little sister.

I do wish the book was written in prose instead of in poem form since it doesn't flow very well sometimes, but other than that, the book was perfect.
About the book:

Wanda is in serious need of an attitude adjustment! She doesn't want to
accompany her family to the Rubber Duck Days Festival, and once there,
she won't participate in any of the events or join in with her friends.
Soon Wanda receives some helpful advice and learns that "sometimes you
have to believe something will be great before it actually is. Being
positive is a choice that makes everything better, not to mention, a
whole lot more fun!"

Sometimes, my kids have attitude problems. And, as dear Hubby pointed out one day, there's a pretty good chance they inherited them from me.

Ouch.

When I sat down to read Whatever Wanda with the kids, I really appreciated the message. It was easy for my kids to understand what the book was saying about bad attitudes and how to fix them plus, I got a good reminder of how to work on my own attitude problem.

Whatever Wanda has a great story line and adorable artwork. It's definitely a must have for our bookshelf! I also plan to look for the other books in the Shine Bright series (Can't Wait Willow and Must-Have Marvin) and will be utilizing the many resources available for kids and adults on the Shine Bright Kids website such as posters, coloring sheets, reward charts, and more!
Bedtime has been an issue since Little Dude was born because he's so needy. Granted, he has gotten much easier to care for, but he still requires a lot of attention. I've always had the three older kids get ready for bed at the same time which involves going to the bathroom, getting a drink, and brushing their teeth. As you can guess, sending three kids into the bathroom at the same time to brush their teeth is chaotic to say the least. Last night, I had each of the kids pick out a book to look at while they sat on the floor next to me as I fed Little Dude. Then, I had them take turns going into the bathroom to do their bedtime routine before returning to finish looking at their books. When they were all done, I set Little Dude down for a minute to tuck them all into their beds and rub their backs. SOOOOOO much easier!! Now, if I can just figure out a way to keep Star from getting out of bed 874 times before she finally falls asleep...

Have you heard of Target's subscription service? I use my Target redcard to get free shipping and 5% off on all my orders from Target which means that I shop online there a lot. I recently discovered that Target has subscriptions to just about any household item that gets used up (toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products, office supplies, etc), and that the subscription service covers diapers and wipes! Plus, I save an additional 5% on all subscription items I order. So now, I have diapers and wipes shipped to my house every month and even save money on them! Disclaimer: This rave review was not sponsored in any way, shape, or form. I just wanted to share something really cool with my readers :)

When people ask me what's wrong with Little Dude, I usually say that he's medically complex or special needs because it's too hard to explain his issues any other way since we don't have an actual diagnosis. My sister, however, called him special edition the other day. I like that way better than special needs :)

I recently opened an Instagram account for my boutique (@annaliesbabyboutique) and will be posting special deals, flash sales, Instagram-exclusive products, and giveaways over there!
Due to being pregnant or having a small baby for the past 3 years straight, I kind of dropped out of the craft show circuit for a while. This past Saturday, I was able to set up a table as a vendor at a craft show again! Princess and my younger sister came along to help out. My mother-in-law babysat Little Man and Star at her house, but couldn't watch Little Dude because they're remodeling their house, and his lungs can't handle the dust and paint smells, so I got to take him along as well. It was a lot of fun, and I realized how much I'd missed doing craft shows. Princess was very courteous and informative to everyone who stopped at our table. She also took it upon herself to make sure that everyone had my business cards "because it's free." She was adorable and definitely an entrepreneur in training!
When I got pregnant with my first child, I read all the pregnancy books and a ton of parenting books. None of them even remotely prepared me for the reality of being a mom. Sure, friends and family try to warn you what it's going to be like to have a baby, but until you are there in the trenches, there's no way you can actually know.

No one told me just how much poop, vomit, and other body fluids I would deal with as a parent, a lot of it with my bare hands and a few baby wipes.

No one told me that I would learn to survive on 3 hours of interrupted sleep and still get up and keep the kids alive the next day. And no one warned me that I would live like that for 6 months straight after my youngest child was born.

No one told me that the constant demands from four kids all needing something from me at the same time would be enough to make me want to hide, rocking, in a corner somewhere while my blood pressure skyrocketed.

No one told me that I would cry when my babies got shots or how much my heart would ache when my kindergartner tearfully told me that kids on the playground were making fun of her because of her hair.

No one told me that there would be days when I would sit down to eat supper with Hubby after the kids went to bed and realize that it was the first time I'd eaten or sat down all day.

And seriously...if someone had told me that I would have a baby with a feeding tube, a list of 12 diagnoses, and a possible genetic syndrome who screamed for his first 6 months of life, I would've run crying from the room.

When you read all of that, being a mom sounds awful.

But here's the secret...no one tells you how your heart nearly explodes with love when that tiny baby is placed in your arms. No one tells you that one ounce of the good stuff in parenting is so amazing that it cancels out 2 tons of the bad stuff. No one tells you that no matter how hard it gets, you'll just keep on going and know in your soul that it's worth it.

Honestly, no one could have told me because until I became a mom, there's no way I could've understood.

I woke up on Tuesday morning with a slight cold and some asthma issues. Not a big deal, I just declared the day to be "Watch as Much TV As You Want While Mom Sits on the Couch and Does Nothing" Day. Except that, a few hours later, I realized that my asthma was getting worse. Fast. I called my mom and asked her if she could come help with the kids because just keeping them alive that day was obviously going to be more than I could handle. She quickly arrived and despite a nebtreatment and over a dozen puffs of my inhaler, my breathing was quickly deteriorating. At one point, while sitting on the floor, I tried to stand up and was immediately very dizzy, to the point where I couldn't even keep my head up. At that point, my mom called 911. The kids thought it was cool when the ambulance came to our house and took mommy away. I ended up staying the night in the hospital and my mom babysat for us until Hubby came home for the night.

So the point of that kind of boring saga was that I realized how unprepared I really am. As I sat on the floor with an oxygen mask on my face while the EMTs got ready to take me to the hospital, all I could think of was how much I needed to tell my mom about taking care of Little Dude. Thankfully, I had an outline of his feeding schedule written up already so I could just hand that over to her, but when it came to his tube care, his skin care, his breathing issues...that's all stuff that I do everyday and I know exactly what works and what doesn't work with him. I know what to watch for and when to change something in his routines. I know what therapies he needs to work on that day and how much he can handle. I realized that I'm the only person who knows how to fully take care of him.

Also, the thought that I could've been alone with the kids when I nearly passed out and was unable to even reach for my phone is a terrifying thought. Thank God my mom was there when that happened.

Because of my severe asthma, I've often had to rely on others to help me out. I hate having to be dependent on others and constantly ask for help, but I don't have a choice. And now that I have four kids, one of whom is medically complex, it bothers me even more. My asthma has nearly killed me on several occasions, and I've always been very aware that I have a potentially fatal disease.

If something were to happen to me, I need to have the peace of mind that Little Dude will continue to receive all the care he needs, but his care is complicated and I'm the only person who knows all of the details. Over the next week, I'm going to put together a word document detailing everything I can possibly think of regarding his medical conditions, his feeding, the storage of his supplies, etc and print it off so anyone who needs to take care of him can do so. I already have a binder with an overview of his medical history and the names and contact info of all of his specialists, but I definitely need more information on the day-to-day part of his care. Every month or so, I'll need to update the word document, but will be able to easily do so and then print off an updated copy.

And just to end things on a good note, I put new batteries in our ball popper and Little Dude was a huge fan :)
Likes: He loves attention and pretends to be shy now by ducking his head into my shoulder when someone smiles back at him. He likes to put things in something and take them back out again (for example, putting toys in a bucket). He loves army crawling all over the house, and we have to be super vigilant about things on the floor because he puts EVERYTHING in his mouth and chokes easily. At least several times a day, you can find me hurdling furniture to sweep his mouth with my finger and pound on his back. I've been very close to calling 911 because he was starting to turn blue, but thankfully, I've always gotten him breathing again before it gets to that point.

Dislikes: He doesn't like having things taken away from him and will scream and cry. For example, here's his face after I took a crayon away from him:

Eating habits: BIG news here! For the last several weeks, Little Dude has been trying to catch up after not growing since November due to being sick so much. When he was sick, his motility slowed down so much that I had to vent him at every feeding because of the extra air in his stomach (which happens when food sits in the stomach longer). When I would vent him, the entire last feeding would still be in his stomach, even several hours later. His GI doctor diagnosed him with illness-induced gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach) which has since resolved itself. Now, he's actually been HUNGRY and asking for food, and then more food. It still blows my mind that he cries because he wants food. I actually had to increase the amount of his feeds because he was finishing them and crying for more. I've hardly had to tube feed him at all since he started this. I know that it may not last, but we'll take what we can get!
We're in a transition phase of trying to lessen the amount of formula he takes in lieu of solid foods. Right now, I'm still tweaking his feedings, but the goal is 4 solid food feedings (baby food) a day with several opportunities to practice eating table foods as well and then however much formula he wants to drink after that. It's slow going since he has such a strong gag reflex and chokes easily, but I know he'll get there eventually. He likes eating solid foods, but hasn't been very happy about getting less bottles.
Because we don't know for sure if he has any food allergies or Celiac's Disease (we were told that a test showed a strong possibility of it), for the time being, we are not giving him gluten, dairy, or soy. He'll be having more testing done soon to determine what foods are safe for him to eat.

Sleeping habits: He takes a morning nap from about 9:30 am to
10:30 and an afternoon nap from about 1 pm to 3 or 4 pm. He sleeps okay
at night, but does still wake up several times. He usually goes right
back to sleep when I give him his pacifier.
Milestones: No new milestones this month, but he's been getting better at sitting unsupported. We're currently working on getting him to crawl on his hands and knees instead of army crawling on his tummy because being on his tummy that much is irritating his G Tube site and causing breakdown of skin. He wears a special belt when he's on the floor now and that seems to be helping to protect his G Tube, but we still need to get him up off of it.

Miscellaneous: His therapist has put his development at an 8-9 month level which seems very appropriate to me. He may be a little behind, but he's making progress and that's what's important. Every once in a while, I get a little sad that he's so far from where my other kids were at this age, but my best friend helped me get some perspective on that that's really helped. She pointed out that he's my last baby, and I get to keep him as a baby a little bit longer.

I tallied up Little Dude's first year, medically speaking. Some of the numbers, I wasn't 100% sure on since I didn't start marking everything down in my day planner until we were several months in to his medical journey.

Procedures (included 1 surgery and 2 sedations): somewhere between 15-20
Blood draws: somewhere between 10-15
Hospital stays: 5 (14 days total)
ER visits: 8
Doctor appointments and therapies: 80

That's more than my other three kids combined and that's just in his first year!

Don't forget to check out the first annual Little Dude's Birthday Blessings Bash that takes place the whole month of March!
In the year since he's been born, our family has been blessed in so many ways by family, friends, and complete strangers. We've received meals during and after Little Dude's hospitalizations, money to help cover gas and other expenses from his many doctor appointments, visits, phone calls, and messages of encouragement, help with household chores, etc.

I believe in paying it forward when someone blesses you. So, in honor of Little Dude's birthday, I'll be donating 20% of the amount of each order placed during the month of March at my Etsy shop, Annalie's Baby Boutique, to Gracie's Gowns. I plan to make this an annual event and will pick a different organization to donate to every March. I'm excited to kick off the first annual "Little Dude's Birthday Blessings Bash" month!

I've written about Gracie's Gowns before, but just to refresh your memory, Gracie's Gowns is a non-profit organization that provides personalized hospital gowns to chronically ill and special needs children at no cost to the family. Gracie's Gowns is very special to me because not only was it founded and run by a very sweet friend of mine, but because Little Dude received a gown from her as well.
Star's bedtime and naptime ritual includes a "huh and a mah." She
gives me a big hug (huh) and a kiss (mah) on each cheek. Then she leans
back to look at my face, says, "uh-oh!" and, wipes her kisses off my
face before laying down to go to sleep.

Tattling is not allowed in my house. It's okay to tell on someone if they're hurting someone or breaking something. So, when a child comes to me with that tattling look on their face and starts their sentence with, "So-and-so did...", I cut them off and ask them if someone is hurt. If the answer to that is no, I ask if someone is breaking something. Princess came to tattle on Little Man to me the other day so I asked her both questions. Her first answer was no, but when I asked her if someone was breaking something, she replied, "Just the rules!"
Touche, my dear.

Little Man: Mommy, can I take my sweater to grandma's house?
Me: Sure, I guess. Why do you need your sweater?
Little Man: In case I get sweaty, then I can put it on.
Last week was Tube Feeding Awareness Week. There are so many myths and wrong beliefs about tube feeding that raising awareness is important so kids and adults who are tube fed don't feel ostracized or abnormal. I shared Little Dude's tube feeding story on the blog and shared posts on Facebook and Instagram to help raise awareness.
Can we just take a second to talk about how a certain little guy is only 2 1/2 weeks away from turning ONE?!?! I've always looked forward to my kiddos going into the toddler stage as it's so much fun (and work!), but it scares me a bit with Little Dude because I have to face the fact that he's slowly growing out of being a baby and that means that we will have new challenges soon. So far, he's unable to eat any table foods without choking except for gluten-free puffs that I break in half for him, we don't know for sure if he has Celiac's Disease or not, we know he has food sensitivities, but not sure to what, and he is nowhere near ready to drink out of anything other than a bottle. I'm excited and nervous to see what this next year brings for my sweet little boy. We'll just take it one step at a time and I'll keep reminding myself that he won't be going off to college getting all of his nutrition from formula in a bottle.
Yesterday, Little Dude had a full day at the doctor's with a 4+ hour long gastric emptying study (results came back normal, yay!!) and two appointments. We had some time to kill between appointments so the two of us headed over to the mall. I hadn't been to Gymboree for a while, and so I loaded Little Dude in the stroller and made a beeline for the store as soon as we got through the mall entrance.

I found some adorable things for Little Dude that I wanted to share with you.

I love the nostalgia of paper airplanes so when I saw that there's a whole line at Gymboree dedicated to them (search for paper planes to see the whole collection), I couldn't walk away empty-handed. I found two onesies and an adorable knotted beanie hat for Little Dude.
and we had no idea what he would face. If someone had told me that he
would have to be tube fed, I would have completely freaked out. In fact, after one of Little Dude's many doctor appointments when he was about a month old, I stopped at the Target Cafe to attempt to feed him before driving the 45 minutes back home. While I struggled to get my screaming baby boy to take even one drink from his bottle, a family at a nearby table struck up a conversation with me. They could definitely see that something was wrong and asked about him. We talked for a while and at one point, the mom asked what the doctors were planning to do if we couldn't get him to eat. I remember standing there stunned when she asked if he would have to get a feeding tube. I stammered out that I didn't know, but in my head I was in complete disbelief and denial that it would ever come to that. I mean, only kids who were seriously ill, disabled, or premature got feeding tubes, right? Little did I know that less than a month later, I would be signing a form allowing a surgeon to place a G Tube in my baby's stomach.

Weight and height: 16 pounds, 3 ounces and 28 inches long. In January, he had pneumonia and RSV and wasn't able to handle his regular volumes of food so he lost some weight. He was down to 15', 14", but thankfully he's starting to put some of that weight back on now.

Wearing size: Size 3 diapers and 9-12 month clothes.

Likes: He loves attention and is total little flirt with the sweetest smile. He loves army crawling around the house and bugging the big kids.

Dislikes: He really hates it
when I do his G Tube and skin care every morning-not because it hurts,
but
because he can't roll over and play when I'm doing it. He also hates
his skin care routine because he strongly dislikes having his hands,
arms, and head touched and moved around. To get him to
lay still and stop fighting me, I play a Youtube video on my tablet for
him to watch while I'm taking care of his tube (he's a big fan of Peter
Hollens, Lindsey Stirling, and Baby Einstein).

Eating habits: He gets four bottles a day with 5 ounces of
water and 3 scoops of the Alimentum formula which is concentrated for lower volume. I start each feeding by offering the bottle and whatever he doesn't eat is tube fed. He drinks approximately 50% of his formula. He eats pureed
baby food 2 times a day which I add a teaspoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of rice cereal to for added calories. He had been doing well with gluten free baby puffs, but in the last month, has been throwing up every time he has anything more than purees. I'm attributing that to being sick which makes him even more gaggy than usual.

Sleeping habits: He takes a morning nap from about 9:30 am to
10:30 and an afternoon nap from about 1 pm to 3 or 4 pm. He sleeps okay at night, but does still wake up several times. He usually goes right back to sleep when I give him his pacifier.

Milestones: He finally learned how to sit unsupported!! This was a milestone that we've been working on for months and he finally got strong enough to be able to do it.

Miscellaneous: He was sick for ALL of January with pneumonia and RSV. It was a very long, very difficult month for both of us. He was hospitalized for one night, had three emergency room visits, and saw a doctor several times. He also was on three different antibiotics. I'm so glad he's finally feeling better from that, but his lungs are already sounding junky again so I know that something else is starting up.
We have started taking him to a different health care system because we felt that it was time for some fresh eyes on him. I really loved some of his doctors at Mayo and we're going to miss them, but it's much better for all of his care to be at one place to avoid confusion so he has all new specialists now. The best part is that his new primary care doctor is a genetic specialist and is very good at caring for medically complex children.
