"Grace of God" Dvd Review and Giveaway

Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising"): Many thanks to the Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway.  Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation.  I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.  Only one entrant per mailing address, per giveaway.  If you have won the same prize on another blog, you are not eligible to win it again.  Winner is subject to eligibility verification.

About the movie:
Having lost his faith many years ago, Detective Bill Broadly is called to investigate the disappearance of the local church's collection plate. As he questions its various church members, rumors swirl as more congregants learn about the theft. When one unexpected church-goer confesses to stealing the funds, the confession resurrects Broadly's views on God, and helps him see that through faith and belief there really is rebirth and redemption.
99 Minutes // Genre: Family, Inspirational // Rating:  NR
Stars:
•       John Ratzenberger
                (“Cheers,” WALL-E, Toy Story)
•       Erin Bethea
                (Fireproof, Letters to God)
•       Lorenzo Lamas
(“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Falcon Crest”)

Right from the start of the movie, I had a character pegged as the suspect.  The movie's description said that the thief was an "unexpected church-goer" so I had a few people I thought it also might be, but when the thief finally came clean, I was surprised.  The movie kept me guessing the whole time and had a storyline that was easy to follow, yet interesting with lots of twists and turns.  I enjoyed this movie and can't wait to watch it again with Hubby.

I wasn't really sure how the tagline "a story of Easter redemption" fit the movie, but the message was still really good.  The perception of Christianity in the movie was spot on.  I also enjoyed the humor in the story line.

If you're not the winner of the giveaway, you can still buy your own copy of the dvd at Walmart.

How would you like your own copy of Grace of God?  Enter to win on the Rafflecopter widget below.

This giveaway is open to residents of the US and Canada.  If you've already won this dvd in a different giveaway, you are not eligible to win it again.  All entries will be verified so play nice!  The winner will be emailed and their name will be displayed on the Rafflecopter widget.

"Whatever Wanda" Review and Giveaway

About the book:
Wanda is in serious need of an attitude adjustment!  She doesn't want to accompany her family to the Rubber Duck Days Festival, and once there, she won't participate in any of the events or join in with her friends.  Soon Wanda receives some helpful advice and learns that "sometimes you have to believe something will be great before it actually is.  Being positive is a choice that makes everything better, not to mention, a whole lot more fun!"

Sometimes, my kids have attitude problems.  And, as dear Hubby pointed out one day, there's a pretty good chance they inherited them from me.

Ouch.

When I sat down to read Whatever Wanda with the kids, I really appreciated the message.  It was easy for my kids to understand what the book was saying about bad attitudes and how to fix them plus, I got a good reminder of how to work on my own attitude problem.

Whatever Wanda has a great story line and adorable artwork.  It's definitely a must have for our bookshelf!  I also plan to look for the other books in the Shine Bright series (Can't Wait Willow and Must-Have Marvin) and will be utilizing the many resources available for kids and adults on the Shine Bright Kids website such as posters, coloring sheets, reward charts, and more!

About the author:
Christy Ziglar, financial planner, mother of twins, and niece of legendary motivator and the world's original optimist, Zig Ziglar, is bringing the same timeless wisdom and ageless advice to an entirely new, younger audience through her Shine Bright Kids picture book series.

Overrated by Eugene Cho: A Book Review

Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC's 15 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising"): May thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway.

About the book:
We all want to change the world, but as pastor Eugene Cho found out, it takes more than just desire. It takes action. In this personal confession he encourages readers to discover a practical discipleship that begins with the recognition that changing the world starts with changing ourselves.
Many people today talk about justice, but are they living justly? They want to change the world, but are they being changed themselves? Eugene Cho shares his story, a messy, painful story of being more in love with the ideas behind the actions than counting the cost and being a world-changer in action. Because everyone loves justice and compassion, but few have taken it upon themselves to truly live it out in their own lives. Cho is still on that journey to discover what it means, and invites readers to join him.

About the author:
Eugene is the founder and visionary of One Day’s Wages, a grassroots movement of people, stories, and actions to alleviate extreme global poverty. He is the founder and senior pastor of Quest Church, an urban, multicultural, and multigenerational church in Seattle, Washington. Eugene and his wife, Minhee, have three children.  You can also find Eugene on his blog and website, eugenecho.com

From the author:
This book is my confession. It’s painful and honest, but it’s mine. And it’s this: I am more in love with the idea of changing the world than actually changing the world. This isn’t a message of guilt or shame. But it is a call, to both you and me, to be less infatuated with telling a good story and instead live the good story—a story of faith, hope, courage, and justice. -Eugene Cho

“Are we more in love with the idea of changing the world than actually changing the world?”  - Eugene Cho

After reading the overview of this book, I was intrigued.  So many Christians today are comfortable sitting in their cozy houses, sharing links on Facebook or tweeting about the injustices of the world, but not actually doing something about them.  Eugene Cho challenges us to get up and do something to right those injustices and to get out of our comfort zones.  He reminds us that instead of just getting upset about things, we need to ask ourselves, "what can I do about it?"  I'll be honest...it wasn't a "comfortable" book to read, but I felt that it was a necessary one and one that all Christians should read.

Cho started the book by sharing how his family publicly pledged a years' wages to the cause of justice.  After three years of scrimping, saving, and living without, they were still $10,000 short.  So, on a whim, he decided to put an ad on Craiglist to sublet his family's home to earn that last $10,000.  It worked, but it meant that his family had to leave their home for 10 weeks.  I was taken aback by the faith and sacrifice they showed.  Right then, I knew that I was in for a wild ride with the book.

Cho's use of humor throughout the book was perfect and he was able to use his own stories and anecdotes to make very clear points.

The Purdy River Band and the Coolest Parents Ever

Have I mentioned that my parents are in a band?  Actually, they're in several bands, but one of the bands just put out their first CD!  Yes, my parents are that cool.

The band is called the Purdy River Band, and they play bluegrass music.  My dad, Dave Anderson, plays the banjo (let the banjo jokes fly!) and sings lead and harmony.  My mom, Elizabeth Anderson, plays the upright bass and sings harmony.  My dad's brother, Jon Anderson, plays the mandolin, fiddle, and dobro and sings lead and harmony. The fourth member of the band (who I'm actually not related to, lol) is Chuck Lahr who plays guitar, sings lead, and writes the songs for the band.

My dad recorded and produced the CD and FYI, he's a total perfectionist when it comes to stuff like that so the sound is amazing.

Coolest guitar picks ever :)

The Purdy River Band can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation and on their website.  You can buy their cd, Midnight Run, on Amazon.  Check it out!

Adelaide's Attic Review and Giveaway

One of my favorite things about having little girls is the hair accessories.  We have tons of hairbows, headbands, barrettes, etc, but there's always room for more.  So when Julie from one of my favorite blogs, Director Jewels, started her own Etsy shop, I was pretty excited to see all the beautiful headbands she creates.  She also makes stuffed owls, pillows, party supplies, and more!  She was sweet enough to send me two headbands, one for each of my girls.

Of course, Star is in the fun toddler stage where she refuses to be photographed as anything other than a blur, but I managed to get one quick picture of the two girls together.

Princess was kind enough to model both of the headbands for a few more pictures.

The headbands are really well made and even when I caught Star chewing on hers, it stayed together perfectly (although I am not advocating using them as chew toys, obviously.)

The headbands themselves are made with soft FOE that is so stretchy and comfortable that the girls don't mind wearing their headbands all day.

Julie was kind enough to let me interview her.

Q: When did you start your business?
A: I've been crafting since I was a little girl, so owning a shop has kind of always been a dream.  I opened Adelaide's Attic at the beginning of 2014.

Q: How did you get started?
A: After creating gifts for my own kids, friends, and family members wiht positive reviews and encouragement, I decided to take the leap and offer my products to others!

Q: Describe some of your products:
A: I dabble in many crafting mediums, so you never know what may pop up in my shop!  So far, my product list includes children's clothing (dresses and tie onesies), plush personalized pillows, and lovey blankets, and a large assortment of hair accessories.

Q: What inspires you?
A: There is inspiration in just about everything in the world, but I draw the most from my beautiful children and their laughter, bright sunshine after a week of rainy days, and breathtakingly beautiful music.

How would you like a hair accessory for your little one from Adelaide's Attic?  Julie was sweet enough to offer my readers a hair accessory of choice, up to a $15 value.  Enter in the rafflecopter widget below.  You can also use the coupon code BLOG2014SUPERMOMMY for 10% off any purchase through August 31st at Adelaide's Attic.

"The Marriage You've Always Wanted" Review and Giveaway

When I was given the chance to review Gary Chapman's new book, "The Marriage You've Always Wanted," I jumped at the chance.  I've read several of his other books including "The Five Love Languages" and have always found his writing to be supported by the Bible and very helpful.

Visit the official website
Like on Facebook
Follow on Twitter
Small group curriculum also available here

About the book:
You can picture the perfect marriage in your mind, but re-creating it in reality doesn't come easy.  Trusted counselor and relationship expert Dr. Gary Chapman reasons the the most sought-after ingredient in any marriage is true oneness.  In "The Marriage You've Always Wanted," he presents expert wisdom and common sense methods to establishing that true unity on emotional and practical levels.  Discover the wit and insight that makes his worldwide presentations and marriage conferences so popular.  Are you trying to change your spouse?  Do you know what it means to really love someone?  Do you feel ignored or even alone in your effort to improve your marriage?  Dr. Chapman has answers and action steps on topics from expressing your emotions to managing your money, all in a format that will have you and your spouse talking and learning with every page.

Hubby and I have been married for over seven years.  During that seven years, we've experienced four surprise pregnancies and added three-soon-to-be-four children to our family, we've moved twice and are currently house hunting, we've each had job changes that were life-changing (not always in a good way), and we've experienced loss of income from those job changes.  That's a lot of stress and changes in seven years time!  Even though our relationship is good, there's always room for improvement, right?  Of course, like any couple, we have our idiosyncracies and habits that bother the other one ("Why can't he pick up his dirty socks?!?"  "Why does she always run the van so low on gas before filling up?!?!")

One of the things I liked the most about this book was that it shows you how to have the marriage you want, not by changing your spouse, but by changing yourself.  It's unrealistic to expect to be able to change someone else, and you can only start with yourself.  Gary Chapman lays everything out on the table and doesn't sugar coat things.  The book can be pretty convicting, but it's definitely a good thing!

This isn't a very long book, but it can take a while to get through.  I'm still working through it as I want to be sure to give each chapter the attention it deserves before moving on to the next one.  At the end of each chapter is a section with questions and challenges to help you apply what you've learned.  The way the book is written means that it can be done by one spouse alone or by both together.

Even if you're not currently having struggles in your marriage, this book can help strengthen your relationship and that's always a good thing.  I definitely recommend it to every married couple.

"The Sparkle Box" Review and Giveaway

Growing up, we always hung a stocking for Jesus at Christmas time.  One year, I tried to get my siblings to write their good deeds on a slip of paper and put them in the stocking as a gift for Jesus, but you know how siblings can be...  After about a week or so, I gave up because I was the only one doing it, but it's time to start a similar tradition with my own family (because my kids listen to me better than my siblings did).  I've been waiting until my kids were a little bit older and now that Princess is 5 and Little Man is 3, they're able to understand things a little better so it's time.

Which is why, when I received the book "The Sparkle Box" to review, I was thrilled.  Here's a synopsis of the book from the website:

Sam is so excited about Christmas! He's thinking about what to put on his Christmas list, anticipating holiday parties and puzzling over one very mysterious gift – a sparkly box sitting on the mantel above the fireplace. Written by Jill Hardie and brought to life by the rich illustrations of Christine Kornacki, The Sparkle Box is a heartfelt Christmas story that celebrates the beauty and excitement of the Christmas season, while gently bringing the true meaning of Christmas into focus through a story that features a powerful Christmas tradition. Children and adults of all ages will be captivated by The Sparkle Box and forever changed when they discover the Sparkle Box is a gift that honors Jesus on his birthday. Readers moved to adopt this faith-centered Christmas tradition in their homes can put a Sparkle Box, included with the book, under their own Christmas tree.

This book explains the whole concept really well for young kids and Princess is already excited to get started on our own Sparkle Box.  I loved that the book came with a sparkle box in the back to put together and use.  We haven't started filling it up yet, but I think December 1st would be a good time to start to kick off the Christmas season :)  I've been putting together a list of Random Acts of Kindness I can do with the kids.

The Sparkle Box assembled.

It really sparkles!

Audrey Bunny Review and Giveaway

About the book:
From best-selling women's author Angie Smith (I Will Carry You, Mended) comes this sweet children's book about a stuffed animal named Audrey Bunny who fears her imperfections make her unworthy of a little girl's love.  She'll learn the truth soon enough, and young readers will learn that everyone is special and wonderfully made by God.

About the author:
Angie Smith is the wife of Todd Smith (lead singer of Dove Award winning group Selah), best-selling author of Mended, I Will Carry You, and What Women Fear, and one of the most popular speakers and blog writers in the country. She holds a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology from Vanderbilt University and lives with her husband and daughters in Nashville, TN.

As soon as I received the book Audrey Bunny by Angie Smith in the mail, I opened the package and read it right there in the car.  I wasn't disappointed and, I don't know if it's just the pregnancy hormones or what, but it brought tears to my eyes.   I'd read Angie's story on her blog a few years ago about losing her baby girl Audrey just a few hours after giving birth and the stuffed bunny that came to mean so much to her family.

I loved the parent connection in the back of the book as it allowed me to discuss the book with my kids.  They're a little too young to grasp the concept of the letter project, but it's something that would be good to do with them when they get a little older.

"Rufus and Ryan Go To Church" Review and Giveaway

I was excited to receive the book Rufus and Ryan Go to Church to review.  The little boy in the story, Ryan, reminds me so much of 3 year old Little Man.  I read the book to Little Man, who was very excited that Ryan gets to do the same things at church that he does.

Rufus and Ryan Go to Church is very well-written to appeal to young children.  I love that the book is a sturdy board book that even Star can look at on her own.  This is a book that will be coming with us to church on Sunday in our "quiet bag."  The author, Kathleen Long Bostrom, also has another book in the series titled Rufus and Ryan Say Their Prayers.

You can find out more at www.idealsbooks.com and facebook.com/idealsbooks

I Am Second

"Actors. Athletes. Musicians. Business leaders. Drug addicts. Your next-door neighbor. People like you. The authentic stories on iamsecond.com provide insight into dealing with typical struggles of everyday living. These are stories that give hope to the lonely and the hurting, help from destructive lifestyles, and inspiration to the unfulfilled."

I had never heard of the I Am Second movement until I was given the opportunity to review it on my blog.  I was intrigued by the name and the information I was given, and so I visited the website to learn more.  I Am Second is a movement about putting God first in our lives.  If we do that, we will be more willing to serve and love others.  There are many stories and videos on the website, some from famous people whose names you will recognize and others from regular people just like you and me.  Their stories will encourage you to be Second and to put God first.  On the website, you will also find information for calling, chatting, or emailing to talk and get support for your own struggles.

T-shirt and bracelet to support I Am Second

There is also a book available which I am planning to get my hands on very soon called "I Am Second: Real Stories. Changing Lives" by Doug Bender.

You can help support the movement by volunteering or giving financially.   You can find I Am Second on Facebook and Twitter.

Jonah Book Review and Giveaway-Closed

win, giveaway, free book, Jonah and the Whale

We received this book in the mail yesterday to review and it's already a hit at my house.  I read it to the kids twice and Grandma read it to them once before bed.  I had my doubts about the book at first because I was worried that it might be a little, um...disrespectful or non-factual, but that was not the case at all.  I especially liked the Parent Connection page in the back of the book that provided Bible references and questions to ask your child.  Princess was able to have a discussion with me about the book and what we can learn from Jonah's the whale's story.

The book says it's geared for children between the ages of 4-8, but I think the humor would appeal to children older than that as well (hey, I thought it was funny and I'm an adult!)  Princess is 5 years old and while she enjoyed the book, I feel like the humor of the situation (the whale telling the story instead of Jonah) was somewhat lost on her.

Other titles in Troy Schmidt's series are "Hey God, Can You Stop the Rain so I Can Get off Noah's Stinky Smelly Ark?" and "Hey God, I'm Having an Awful Vacation in Egypt Thanks To Moses."  which will be released in May, 2013.

A Box of Goodies!

So...I have this awesome friend, Jessica, who sent me a box of fun stuff for Star after she was born.  The day the package arrived was like Christmas.  Lots of cute baby girl clothes, a sweet musical baby toy, and some goodies from her boutique!

When she told me she was sending me a package for Star, I was pretty excited.  I'm a repeat customer of hers and have never been disappointed with my orders.

Jessica sent me an adorable handmade owl print blanket with Star's birth details embroidered on the corner.  I can't show it to you because I'm not comfortable sharing all the details with the internet world, but I can assure you it's an awesome blanket and Star loves being snuggled up in it.

Jessica also sent me four burp cloths from her boutique.  I love the patterns she picked out for them, and they're so big and absorbent, which is a must.  So many store-bought burp cloths are thin or too small to really be effective, but these are perfect!

You can find Jessica's boutique on Facebook and Etsy.

Jewel of the Lion Fudge Review & Discount

Back in July, I was browsing Etsy for chai flavored products.  I'm kind of addicted to chai.  Ok, really addicted.  Anyways, I stumbled on this shop that sells chai fudge.  Chai and fudge.  Wow.  Now that's a genius combination.  I started browsing the shop and almost died when I saw the selection of fudge that Julie, the shop owner, had available.  I agonized over the selection for quite a while before choosing these six flavors for a sampler pack of fudge: Bacon Maple, Banana Cream, Chai Tea, Root Beer Float, Caramel Popcorn, and Cotton Candy.

Cotton Candy Fudge
I (reluctantly) let my family sample the different flavors.  Hubby, ever stoic, said the fudge was good.  Everyone else swooned.  The flavors were unbelievably real.  My favorite was the caramel popcorn. I actually had cravings for popcorn after trying the fudge.

Caramel popcorn fudge

The customer service at Jewel of the Lion is superb as well.  The fudge arrived in the mail very quickly and the vacuum sealed pieces were generous.  In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have ordered fudge in July as I had to refrigerate it and wait for it to harden back up before I could open the packages.

Red Velvet Cheesecake Fudge

Julie doesn't limit her shop to just fudge (just fudge, ha!)  She also makes cookies, breads, scones, muffins, and chocolate dipped items including bacon. (Do you think I could get away with having that for breakfast?)

Rootbeer Float Fudge

Here are the flavors currently for sale at Jewel of the Lion.  Add this shop to your favorites on Etsy and keep on eye on it as new flavors are always popping up!

Baby Bug Boutique-Review and Giveaway

Shortly after I discovered the world of Facebook boutiques, I stumbled on Baby Bug Boutique.  Since then, I've placed orders several times (and been thrilled with the results!) and have become friends with the owner, Jessica.

Jessica is so sweet and easy to work with.  She goes above and beyond to ensure the customers' satisfaction and is always coming up with new innovative products to make moms' lives easier.

Jessica first started sewing when she was pregnant with her second child.  Due to a high-risk pregnancy, she had lost her job so she was looking for a hobby to keep her busy.  Money was tight and so, when she saw something she wanted for her children in the store, but couldn't afford it, she was able to design the pattern to make it at home.  She also began to make baby things as gifts for friends and family.  From there, her business blossomed.  She did her first craft show when her son was just 2 weeks old with her dad's help.  Several people there told her that her items were much better and more unique that what they were able to find in a store.  She started a binder with ideas for new products and likes to put her own twist on what she makes.  She now has three children who keep her busy and inspire her to create new things.

Jessica sells ready-made items and does custom orders.  She also stays busy with local craft shows.  You can visit her Facebook page or browse her ecrater store to see what she has to offer.  She also added an embroidery machine to her shop recently and can customize just about any product.

Here are some of the products you can find at Baby Bug Boutique:

Animal Loveys.  I gave my son a sock monkey animal lovey for his birthday and both Little Man and Princess love playing with it!

Car Seat Canopies.  Great for protecting your little one!

Trash Stash Bags for your car.  You could also use these to store toys, kleenex, diapers, etc. in your car so they're not all over the floor.

Crayon Totes.  Perfect for in the car, at restaurants, etc.  Store crayons and paper in the tote and your child can carry it him/herself with the fun handle.

Crinkle Clip On Lovey.  Babies just love the crinkly sounds, soft minky backing, and colorful ribbon tags.  Slide a toy link through one of the ribbon loops and clip it onto a stroller or carseat so it doesn't get lost.

First Aid To Go Pouch.  These have a clear vinyl front so you can see what you have at a glance.  No diaper bag or purse should be without one of these!

I Spy bags.  Each bag has an assortment of tiny objects for children to find and comes with a laminated list of what is inside, and a loop that the list is attached to on a key ring.

Nap mat.  These have a soft pillow with a blanket on top.  Perfect for kindergarten, sleepovers, etc.

Prayer Pillows.  These have a pocket on the front that a New Testament can slide into.  You can also write prayer requests down on paper and store them in the pocket.

Reusable Snack Bags.  I use ours almost every day for Princess's allergy-free snacks, Hubby's lunchpail snacks, and snack for church and outings.

Tidy Tote Bag.  These have a waterproof vinyl lining and are great for stashing wet or dirty diapers, bibs, and clothing while you're out.
